n the late 1970's United States and the soviet Union backed away from policies of brinkmanship there was always the threat of Nuclear war

Tensions continued with Johnson with the involvement in Vietnam
Vietnam was very unpopular

Late 1970's the united states was concerned with protesters in the soviet union
This ended 2nd round SALT negotiations
Reagan continued to move away from detente

There was a change in soviet leadership in 1985 which brought a new policy into effect
